LCCM (Latinxs/Chicanxs for Community Medicine) at UCLA is an undergraduate organization dedicated to the promotion and development of a communication network for pre-health students. This is achieved by promoting student interest in the improvement of health care for underserved communities in California and Baja California. LCCM also facilitates educational programs for the recruitment and retention of pre-health students in areas such as academic success, career opportunities, and the politics of medicine. Pre-health students are given exposure to community services and clinical experience.
Our Goal
Through this conference, we hope to recognize high school and community college/undergraduate students interested in health professions and encourage them to pursue their career and academic goals. It will be an incredible opportunity for students to listen to inspirational speakers, attend empowering workshops, and receive guidance towards valuable resources that will help them succeed. This conference will also be a great way to network with medical professionals and learn about the different resources available beyond the university setting.
Community Service Projects
The student's exposure to the medical field is developed through four health project components of LCCM at UCLA. Students interested in providing necessary service to underserved communities can join the Latino Student Health Project (LSHP). This project has been dedicated to providing free hypertension, glucose, anemia, cholesterol screenings, and health education to underserved communities. Students can join the campaign in HIV/AIDS awareness to youth in the Los Angeles region by participating with the Black/Latino AIDS Project (BLAIDS). Members of this project are given the chance to tackle the issues of HIV awareness via creative and innovative high school presentations. Another facet of LCCM's promotion of health is addressed through the Donations of Tissues and Organs (DoTOrg). This Project allows for students to become involved with de-stigmatizing the issue of organ and tissue donation by educating youth and families. LCCM's newest component is known as Aspire Learn Mentor Achieve (ALMA). ALMA Science Academy's mission is to expose underserved youth in the Santa Ana community to the STEM curriculum while fostering mentorship between the underserved youth and the UCLA and UCI undergraduate volunteers. Ultimately, LCCM cultivates a drive within students to increase access of medical care and knowledge to underserved communities.
